Faculty Research Assistance Grants for 2025-2026 Academic Year

Applications are due Sunday, October 26.

Funding requests up to $1,500 will be considered.

FRAP provides financial support to faculty members who integrate undergraduate students into their ongoing research projects. This grant is specifically designed to help offset the direct expenses associated with undergraduate participation. Students may not be paid wages from this award.

Changes to FRAP

This year, we are consolidating FRAP grants into one cycle with a fall application deadline. Faculty who anticipate working with students in Winter and Spring must apply for the Fall deadline.

Students benefiting from the grant must receive academic units for their work. Names and perm numbers of potential FRAP participants are not required at the time of application.

To apply, faculty are asked to write a brief description of the student contributions.

Eligibility

Applicant must be a member of the Academic Senate or have received a written exemption prior to application from the FRAP Grant administrator: anita@ucsb.edu

How To Apply

Fill out the online application form.

Write a short description of the work students will be doing as part of the project (250 words).

In evaluating proposals, the review committee will consider the pedagogical benefit: How and why is what is being proposed useful, necessary, or important for undergraduate learners?

FRAP Grant Terms

The funds awarded are to be used for project-related expenses, excluding salary, furniture, or durable goods.

These funds are for faculty initiated research. Undergraduate students assisting the research must be enrolled in a 99/99RA or 199/199RA course with the applicant listed as the instructor of record.

Funds must be expended within the fiscal year in which they are requested. Requests for unspent funds will be initiated in May of the award year.

Grant recipients must submit the following report:

  • A 250-500 word description of the work undergraduate student(s’) contributions to the research and its impact on their learning.
  • A post-project report on expenditures.
  • List of students enrolled in 99/199RA credits who contributed to the grant supported research.
